Tel Aviv, March 26: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that Ali Reza Tangsiri, the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy, was killed in an airstrike.
In a brief video message, Netanyahu stated that the Israeli military will continue to confront its adversaries with full force. He revealed that the IRGC Navy commander was targeted and eliminated on Wednesday night while overseeing operations in the Strait of Hormuz.
Prior to Netanyahu’s announcement, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz also confirmed Tangsiri’s death in a video statement. Katz described the operation as precise and dangerous, stating, “On Wednesday night, the IDF eliminated the commander of the Revolutionary Guards Navy, Tangsiri, along with senior naval command officials.”
Israeli media first reported Tangsiri’s death, citing a military official who claimed that he was killed during attacks on Iran’s Bandar Abbas city. Tangsiri was a prominent figure in Iran’s maritime military strategy and played a significant role in monitoring vessels and military actions in the Hormuz region.
Born in Bushehr province in southern Iran, Tangsiri became part of the IRGC Navy after playing a crucial role in the Iran-Iraq War and the so-called Tanker War, which marked the first conflict between Iran and the United States in the 1980s.
He commanded the IRGC Navy’s first naval district in Bandar Abbas and served as deputy commander from 2010 to 2018 before taking over as the chief of the force.
While both the Israeli Defense Minister and Prime Minister have made claims regarding Tangsiri’s death, Iran has yet to officially confirm the news. If confirmed, Tangsiri’s death would add to the growing list of senior Iranian officials killed since the onset of hostilities on February 28, following joint military actions by the United States and Israel against Iran.
