Ishan Kishan Dedicates T20 World Cup Victory to Late Cousin

Ahmedabad, March 9: Wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan played a pivotal role in leading the Indian cricket team to victory in the T20 World Cup 2026. In the final against New Zealand, he delivered an explosive performance, scoring 54 runs off just 25 balls, significantly contributing to the team’s historic win. Ishan also took two spectacular catches during the match.

Ishan dedicated the Indian team’s championship victory to his cousin, who tragically passed away in a car accident just a day before the final.

After the match, Ishan shared, “To be honest, my cousin died in a car accident yesterday. I played well for her. I spoke with Hardik Bhai, who advised me to keep the team ahead. I dedicate this win to her. Today is Women’s Day, making it even more special.”

Despite his personal loss, Ishan credited Hardik’s advice for helping him stay calm and focused on the game.

The T20 World Cup 2026 served as a significant platform for Ishan Kishan’s strong return to international cricket. After leading Jharkhand to victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with his impressive batting and captaincy, he was selected directly for the New Zealand T20 series and the World Cup team. Ishan made his comeback memorable, helping the Indian team clinch victory in both the New Zealand series and the T20 World Cup.

Recalling a conversation with Suryakumar Yadav regarding the World Cup, Ishan said, “When Sury Bhai called, I took a screenshot and thought it was for the World Cup. He asked if we would win the World Cup. I replied, ‘Will you believe it?’ He said, ‘Let’s do it.’”

Ishan Kishan emerged as the second-highest run-scorer for the Indian team in the T20 World Cup 2026, amassing 317 runs in 9 innings at an average of 35.22 and a strike rate of 193.29.
