
New Delhi, March 5: During winter, sesame oil is recommended for massage and consumption to protect the body from the cold and provide warmth. Sesame strengthens the body and helps fortify bones. But is it advisable to use sesame oil for massage in summer? Ayurveda suggests that while sesame oil massage is essential in winter, it can also yield beneficial results in summer if done at the right time.
In Ayurveda, “Abhyanga” refers to the practice of massaging the entire body with warm oil using gentle pressure. Ayurvedic texts describe sesame oil as “the best oil” because it nourishes the skin deeply and calms the Vata dosha. The question arises: should one massage with sesame oil during the summer? In this season, the Pitta dosha increases, and sesame oil has a warming effect. Therefore, it is generally advised to avoid warming substances in summer.
One can massage with sesame oil two to three times a week during summer. For this, warm the oil slightly and massage the body gently on an empty stomach before breakfast. This practice enhances blood circulation, provides joint protection, reduces Vata dosha, deeply nourishes the skin, alleviates dryness, reduces stress, and improves sleep. In Ayurveda, Abhyanga is not just a massage; it is a traditional method to maintain balance in both body and mind. It is not necessary to completely abandon this practice in summer, but it should be approached with caution.
While the benefits of sesame oil massage are clear, certain precautions must be taken. If one has a high fever, infection, skin allergies, or rashes, or experiences redness and burning sensations due to Pitta, or faces any digestive issues, it is advisable to avoid sesame oil massage. Engaging in this practice under such conditions can exacerbate fever and infections.
