Bristol, June 28: The Ireland women’s cricket team has finally achieved its first victory in the T20 World Cup. On Saturday, they stunned the West Indies by winning their Group B match by six wickets. Prior to this, Ireland had faced defeat in 21 consecutive matches.
This marks the first time a team has had to play 22 matches to secure its first win in the Women’s T20 World Cup. The Pakistani team previously lost its first eight matches before breaking the streak in 2012 with a narrow one-run victory against India in a low-scoring match in Galle.
Ireland’s 21-match losing streak is the longest in the history of the Women’s T20 World Cup. The team made its debut in the tournament in 2014 and finally celebrated a victory in 2026. Bangladesh holds the second spot on this list, having lost 16 consecutive T20 World Cup matches, while Sri Lanka and Pakistan are tied for third with seven straight losses each.
In the 27th match of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, the West Indies scored 128 runs, losing seven wickets. Chinelle Henry contributed an unbeaten 27 runs, while captain Hayley Matthews added 22 runs. For Ireland, Amy Maguire and Cara Murray took two wickets each.
In response, Ireland clinched victory in just 18.1 overs. Orla Prendergast led the charge with an impressive 63 runs off 44 balls, including two sixes and eight fours. Amy Hunter chipped in with 28 runs, while Ashwini Munisar took two wickets for the West Indies.
Despite this win, Ireland’s team was already out of the title race, finishing at the bottom of Group B with just one victory from five matches.
