Washington, March 13: US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated on Friday that Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has been injured, leading to turmoil within the country’s military leadership amid ongoing US attacks.
During a Pentagon briefing, Hegseth noted that as military operations continue, Iran’s leadership is under increasing pressure. He remarked that the leadership is no longer in a strong position; they are desperate and hiding.
Hegseth mentioned that the newly appointed leader had issued a written statement calling for unity but has not appeared in public. “We know that the so-called Supreme Leader is injured and possibly disfigured,” he said.
He questioned why the leader has not addressed the nation directly, despite having communication tools at his disposal. “Iran has plenty of cameras and recorders. So why a written statement? I think you know why,” he added.
“They are scared. They are injured. They are fleeing and lack legitimacy,” Hegseth continued. He emphasized that as the conflict intensifies, Iran’s leadership structure is becoming increasingly unstable.
Hegseth argued that the attacks have severely weakened Iran’s armed forces and disrupted the country’s military command structure. He stated that the regime’s military capabilities are collapsing, making communication difficult, let alone coordination. Iranian leaders are reportedly hiding in bunkers and attempting to escape.
The Pentagon has repeatedly asserted that the objective of this military operation is to destroy Iran’s missile capabilities, weaken its naval power, and prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
