Washington, March 19: U.S. intelligence officials have informed senators that recent American operations have significantly diminished Iran’s military and strategic capabilities. However, the Iranian government remains intact and continues to pose a serious threat to U.S. interests and regional stability.
Tulsi Gabbard, the Director of National Intelligence, stated that while the Iranian regime has weakened, it is not yet defeated. During a Senate Select Intelligence Committee meeting on Wednesday, she remarked, “The Intelligence Community estimates that attacks on military capabilities in Iran have greatly weakened it. Its ability to showcase conventional military power has largely diminished, leaving fewer options.”
Officials warned that Tehran possesses both the intent and capability to rebuild its military strength over time. They noted, “The Intelligence Community assesses that if any adversarial regime (the Iranian government) survives, it will likely initiate a years-long effort to rebuild its military, missile, and UAV forces.”
CIA Director John Ratcliffe emphasized that Iran has long been a persistent threat. He told senators, “I believe Iran has consistently posed a threat to the U.S. for a long time, and it remains an immediate threat now.” He also expressed concerns regarding Iran’s missile development ambitions, citing Tehran’s advancing missile and space launch technologies. “If left unchecked, they will have the capability to launch missiles across the entire U.S.,” he warned.
The intelligence assessment indicates that Iran is continuously engaged in conflict with the U.S. and its allies. Gabbard stated, “Iran and its proxies continue to attack U.S. interests and those of its allies in the Middle East.”
Despite military setbacks, there is hope that the Iranian government will remain resilient internally, even as economic and political pressures mount. She added, “The Intelligence Community estimates that the deterioration of Iran’s economy is likely to increase internal tensions.”
U.S. officials stressed that recent operations have disrupted Iran’s nuclear and missile capabilities. Senators from both parties pressed intelligence officials on whether the threat from Iran has been completely eradicated, with many expressing concerns about the disparity between political claims and intelligence assessments.
This congressional hearing is occurring amid ongoing military escalation in the Middle East following U.S.-led attacks under Operation Epic Fury, which targeted Iran’s nuclear and military infrastructure.
