Gujarat Titans Aim for Versatility Under Coach Ashish Nehra

Ahmedabad, March 26: Head coach Ashish Nehra has made it clear that Gujarat Titans (GT) aspire to be a team that can win under any circumstances. The team will kick off its campaign against last year’s runners-up, Punjab Kings, on March 31 in Mohali.

Captain Shubman Gill stated that the focus for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season will be on consistently scoring big runs. During a press conference on Thursday, Gill remarked, “Ultimately, you need to score more runs than the opposing team. Whether it’s by four runs or 150-200 runs, the goal is to win. We are not chasing accolades for scoring 300-350 runs in a single match. We want to be a team that consistently puts up big scores and achieves the right target based on the wicket. We aim to win matches in various conditions. We don’t want to be a team that only performs well on excellent pitches.”

Supporting his captain’s perspective, head coach Ashish Nehra added, “As the captain mentioned, we want to be a team that can win in any situation, whether playing at home or away.”

Since their debut in 2022, Gujarat Titans have reached the playoffs in three out of four seasons. They won the title in their inaugural season and were runners-up in 2023. Nehra also defended the criticism directed at the Titans’ middle order, which suggested that the team relies heavily on top batsmen like Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler for big runs.

He stated, “First of all, as a coach, I don’t believe our middle order is collapsing. Yes, the top three batsmen scored a lot and often batted until the 17th or 18th over, which is a key reason for the team’s strong position after 13-14 matches. There’s no doubt the tournament ended disappointingly, but when your top three batsmen are scoring heavily, the middle order naturally gets fewer balls to play, and that’s not an easy task. In 14 matches, there may have been one or two instances where the number 5 or 6 batsman could have finished the game but didn’t, but that’s part of the game.”

The head coach concluded, “Whether it’s Rahul Tewatia, Shahrukh Khan, or Sherfane Rutherford, they have done their jobs well, which is why we reached that stage. It’s always easy to talk about finishers, but when a batsman comes to the crease in the 18th over needing 35 runs in two overs, especially against bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah or Jofra Archer, it’s not easy at all.”
