New Delhi, February 5: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has criticized German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, labeling him as immature and politically naive in a recent post on X (formerly Twitter). In response to Araghchi’s comments, Merz attributed them to signs of anxiety and insecurity.
Chancellor Merz is currently on a three-day visit to Gulf countries. On the eve of scheduled talks with American diplomats, he urged Iranian leadership to engage in dialogue, expressing significant concern over escalating military tensions in the region.
While speaking to reporters in Doha, Qatar, Merz stated that Iran must cease its nuclear program and refrain from making further military threats against Israel and other regional nations. He emphasized, “Therefore, discussions will intensify in the coming hours,” asserting that Germany’s coordination with the United States is strong.
When questioned about Araghchi’s remarks, Merz acknowledged seeing the tweet and remarked, “It indicates a lot of anxiety and insecurity.”
During his Gulf visit, Merz has met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, with plans to visit the United Arab Emirates afterward.
On Thursday, Araghchi had posted a lengthy response to Merz’s statements, calling him politically naive and reminding him of his condemnation of Israel’s attacks on Iranian nuclear and military sites back in June 2025.
Araghchi shared a post from Merz, in which the Chancellor had projected Iran as a major obstacle to peace ahead of his Gulf tour. He concluded by stating that Tehran still values its relationship with the German public but hopes for a more mature leadership in Berlin.
