New Delhi, March 23: Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araqchi has launched a strong critique against the United States and Israel concerning the Strait of Hormuz. Araqchi clarified that Iran has not closed this strategic maritime route. He attributed the decline in shipping traffic to the pervasive fear of war among insurance companies, which has made shipping firms hesitant to navigate the area. He directly blamed the policies of the U.S. and Israel for this situation.
On the social media platform X, Araqchi accused the U.S. and Israel of instigating war, stating, “The Strait of Hormuz is not closed. Shipping companies are hesitant because insurance firms fear a war that Iran did not start, but you did. No insurance company or Iranian will be intimidated by threats. Try to show respect. The freedom of ships to navigate the seas is only possible when there is freedom to trade. If you do not respect both, you will receive neither.”
The Israeli Defense Forces have reported that they have initiated large-scale airstrikes targeting the infrastructure of Iran’s “terrorist regime” in Tehran. Iranian media has reported significant explosions in the capital, with the Fars News Agency noting loud blasts in five areas of Tehran.
Iranian media stated that the attacks occurred in Areas 1, 4, 11, 13, and 21, with further announcements regarding damage and casualties expected later. Meanwhile, Iran’s air defense systems have been activated in the eastern part of the city, indicating a response to U.S.-Israeli drones.
Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), warned that the situation in the Middle East is extremely serious, worse than the two energy crises of the 1970s combined.
In a speech at the National Press Club in Australia, Birol emphasized that the most significant solution to the current crisis is to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has effectively blocked following U.S.-Israeli attacks on the country.
