Vidisha, May 7: In a groundbreaking initiative, the police in Vidisha district, Madhya Pradesh, have launched the Senior Citizen Police Panchayat. This program aims to address the issues faced by the elderly and ensure they receive justice. So far, it has proven successful, resolving approximately 70% of the complaints received from senior citizens.
The Senior Citizen Police Panchayat was established to enhance respect, security, and sensitivity towards the elderly in society. It has become a platform for justice and trust, where the concerns of senior citizens are taken seriously. The Panchayat ensures swift resolutions through family coordination, social sensitivity, and legal processes.
Launched on January 23, 2025, the Panchayat has held 54 meetings up to April 15, 2026. During these sessions, a total of 187 cases were presented, with 131 successfully resolved. The remaining cases are under legal proceedings based on documentation, evidence, and the presence of relevant parties.
The Panchayat also addresses serious and complex family issues. In a recent meeting, 10 cases were heard, with many complicated family matters resolved through mutual understanding and dialogue.
In one case, a senior citizen from the Shamsabad area reported that his son had misused funds from the Prime Minister’s Housing Scheme and was farming on his land. During the hearing, the Panchayat facilitated a consensus, with the son agreeing to return the remaining funds within 15 days. In another case, a widowed elderly woman complained about threats from her son and an incident where he set fire to a motorcycle parked outside their home. Given the seriousness of the situation, authorities were instructed to take appropriate legal action.
