Lucknow, June 13: An inmate has escaped from police custody in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, causing a stir within the police department. An FIR has been filed against the inmate and three police officers involved in the incident.
The 39-year-old inmate, Haidar Ali Beg, was receiving treatment at King George Medical University’s Gandhi Ward when he managed to flee on Friday morning. The head constables, Dinesh Kumar and Dharmendra Singh, along with Beg, are named in the FIR filed by Jailor Ritvik Priyadarshi at Chowk police station.
Haidar Ali, a resident of Chandipur in Odisha’s Balasore district, had been incarcerated since January 7, 2025. He was admitted to the jail hospital on May 31 due to complaints of vomiting and bleeding. His condition worsened, leading to his transfer to KGMU on June 4. Around 11 AM on Friday, guard Nagesh Chandra Saroj reported Beg’s disappearance.
Haidar Ali is accused of impersonating a military officer and sexually exploiting a woman in Sarojini Nagar, from whom he allegedly swindled ₹4.5 lakh under the pretense of marriage. An FIR was registered against him at Sarojini Nagar police station, leading to his arrest on January 6, 2025. Before his arrest, he worked as a private security guard in Hyderabad and Bengaluru.
This incident follows a previous escape in January, where two inmates charged with murder and rape escaped from Ayodhya district jail by removing bricks from their barrack wall. Following that incident, over 12 jail officials, including the superintendent and deputy jailer, were suspended. In the same month, inmates Ankit and Dimpy from Kannauj district jail created a rope from blankets to scale a high wall and escape, resulting in the suspension of five staff members, including the jailer and deputy jailer.
