Injured Man Walks Miles After IED Blast in Chhattisgarh Forest

In a remote forest area of Lankapalli in Bijapur district, Chhattisgarh, a man was seriously injured after stepping on a pressure-activated Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by Maoists on Friday.

Police officials reported that the victim, Raju Modiyami, accidentally triggered the explosive while walking through the dense forest. The blast caused severe injuries, completely breaking his right heel and seriously damaging his leg.

Despite excruciating pain and heavy bleeding, Modiyami showed remarkable courage and determination. Limping through a difficult path, he managed to cover nearly seven kilometres to reach a nearby community health centre. The local medical staff provided first aid before referring him to Bijapur district hospital for further treatment.

Hospital sources confirmed that Modiyami’s condition remains critical. Doctors are treating the fractured heel and related complications, and he is currently under close medical supervision receiving necessary care.

The Maoists continue to pose a threat to civilians in various Naxal-affected areas by frequently using IEDs to target security forces, often causing unintended harm to local residents. The forests of Bijapur, part of the Bastar division, have become hotspots for such explosive devices, which are commonly planted to ambush patrols or disrupt movement.

Authorities have launched a search operation in the Lankapalli forest to detect and neutralise any additional IEDs, aiming to prevent further casualties. Police officials highlighted that these blasts endanger tribal communities who rely heavily on forest resources for their livelihood.

The local community has praised Modiyami’s arduous journey to safety, seeing it as a testament to human resilience in the face of adversity.

Recently, security forces achieved a significant success by killing six Maoists, including four female cadres, in a fierce encounter in Bijapur. The joint operation by District Reserve Guard (DRG), Cobra, and Special Task Force (STF) dealt a major blow to Maoist activities in the region.
