Maldah, April 3: The mastermind behind the Kaliachak case, Mofakkarul Islam, was apprehended by West Bengal police at Bagdogra Airport. He was attempting to flee the state and was headed to Bengaluru. So far, a total of 35 individuals have been arrested in connection with this case.
Mofakkarul Islam is a practicing lawyer with longstanding ties to the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). A native of Porasa Hatkhola in the Itahar area of North Dinajpur district, he practices at both the Raiganj District Court and the Calcutta High Court. In recent years, he has been residing primarily in Kolkata with his wife and children.
Before the 2021 assembly elections, Islam joined AIMIM and even contested from the Itahar seat, but he lost the election, and his security deposit was forfeited.
On Wednesday night, during an incident of misconduct involving judicial officials in Kaliachak, Islam was seen addressing a crowd. He made inflammatory statements and held judicial officers hostage for nearly seven hours. Following this, the Supreme Court issued an arrest warrant against him. The police had been searching for Mofakkarul Islam at various locations, and he had also cut off mobile communication.
Among those arrested in the Kaliachak case is Maulana Shahjahan, a candidate from the All India Secular Front (AISF) in the Mothabari assembly constituency.
On Wednesday, a group took seven judicial officers, including three women, hostage at the Kaliachak block office. Their names had been removed from the judicial evaluation due to logical discrepancies.
On Thursday, around 1 PM, a large police team led by senior district officials arrived at the scene, dispersing the protesters and ensuring the safety of the judicial officers. After nearly nine hours of being held hostage, the officers were secured. Reports indicate that there was an attempt to attack the convoy while they were being moved to safety.
