IndiGo to Focus on Short-Haul Flights Amid International Expansion Plans, Says CEO
IndiGo will prioritize short-haul flights while expanding internationally, according to CEO Willy Walsh at the Aviation India 2026 conference.

New Delhi, November 3 (Daily Kiran) : IndiGo, India’s largest airline, plans to maintain its focus on short-haul flights even as it pursues international expansion. CEO Willy Walsh made this announcement during the Aviation India and South Asia 2026 conference held in New Delhi.
Walsh emphasized that the airline’s growth strategy will rely on its robust and cost-effective domestic and regional operations. Currently, IndiGo has four Airbus A321XLR aircraft in its fleet, with expectations to increase this number to 14 by the end of 2027. Despite expanding its international network, Walsh assured that this would not impact the airline’s existing short-haul business model.
“We must ensure that while preparing for future opportunities, we do not lose sight of our highly efficient short-haul operational capabilities,” Walsh stated.
Additionally, IndiGo is preparing to incorporate Airbus A350-900 wide-body aircraft into its fleet, with deliveries expected to begin in the second quarter of 2028. However, Walsh noted that extensive preparation and infrastructure development would be necessary before operating this new aircraft type.
IndiGo believes that its competitive edge lies in its low-cost operational structure, which will remain the foundation for future growth. Maintaining this cost efficiency alongside international expansion is a top priority for the company.
Walsh also highlighted the need for better coordination between airlines and airport operators. He urged airport companies to make investment decisions carefully to avoid imposing excessive costs on airlines and passengers.
Currently, IndiGo’s fleet consists of over 440 aircraft, with plans to expand to nearly 600 by 2030. This growth will enhance its presence in both domestic and international markets.
Willy Walsh took on the role of CEO earlier this year, succeeding Peter Elbers, under whose leadership the airline rapidly expanded its domestic and global network.
