New Delhi, April 20: Some athletes elevate their sport through remarkable performances. One such athlete was Karni Singh, born in 1924, who brought international recognition to Indian shooting.
Karni Singh was born in Bikaner, Rajasthan, as the son of Maharaja Sadul Singh and the grandson of General Sir Ganga Singh. He began shooting as a hobby, but it quickly turned into a passion. Over time, he mastered clay pigeon trap and skeet shooting. However, during his early years, shooting was not widely recognized as a sport in India.
Despite this, Karni Singh’s outstanding performances made shooting popular in the country. He became the first Indian to win a medal at the World Shooting Championship, securing a historic silver medal in the track event at the 1962 championship. This was also India’s first medal in this competition. In 1971, he aimed for gold at the Asian Shooting Championship and won a silver medal at the continental championship in 1975. He also succeeded in winning a silver medal at the 1974 Asian Games.
Karni Singh represented India in five Olympic Games: 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972, and 1980, becoming the first Indian to achieve this milestone. His performance at the 1960 Rome Olympics was impressive, finishing in eighth place.
In 1982, during the Asian Games held in Delhi, Karni Singh was the flag bearer for India at both the opening and closing ceremonies. In 1961, he became the first shooter to receive the Arjuna Award in India. To honor his contributions to popularizing shooting in India, the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range was established in Delhi. Karni Singh passed away at the age of 64 on September 6, 1988.
