Tilak Varma Sets IPL Record with a Stunning Century in Just 45 Balls

Ahmedabad, April 20: In a thrilling match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, Tilak Varma, playing for the Mumbai Indians (MI), scored an unbeaten 101 runs against the Gujarat Titans (GT) on Monday. His remarkable innings came off just 45 balls, featuring 7 sixes and 8 fours. This achievement marks the joint-fastest century in IPL history for MI.

Tilak has now equaled the record set by Sanath Jayasuriya, who also reached a century in 45 balls against the Chennai Super Kings in 2008. Following him in the fastest centuries for MI is Cameron Green, who scored in 47 balls against the Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2023. Surya Kumar Yadav also made a notable century in 49 balls against the Gujarat Titans in the same year.

Initially, Tilak struggled, scoring only 19 runs off his first 22 balls. However, he exploded in the next 23 balls, amassing 82 runs. His performance places him fifth on the list of batsmen with the most runs scored in the death overs (16-20) in a single IPL match, where he scored 65 runs off just 18 balls. Above him are Quinton de Kock (71 runs), Tim David (69 runs), Andre Russell (68 runs), Rishabh Pant (67 runs), and AB de Villiers (65 runs).

With this century, Tilak became the second MI batsman to score a century against the Gujarat Titans, following Surya Kumar Yadav’s unbeaten 103 runs off 49 balls in 2023.

In this match held at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the Mumbai Indians posted a total of 199 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. The team had lost 4 wickets for just 96 runs before Tilak partnered with captain Hardik Pandya (15) to add 81 runs for the fifth wicket in just 38 balls, propelling the team to a formidable score.

For the Gujarat Titans, Kagiso Rabada was the standout bowler, claiming 3 wickets, while Mohammad Siraj and Prasidh Krishna took 1 wicket each.
