Mumbai, May 19: Maharashtra’s Minister of Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Protection, Chhagan Bhujbal, addressed several critical issues including rising fuel prices, kerosene distribution, pending payments to farmers, and the situation regarding Naxalism.
During a media interaction, he emphasized that the increase in petrol and diesel prices is not just a problem for Maharashtra or India, but a global crisis.
Bhujbal pointed out that countries like Europe, the United States, and Japan are facing similar challenges with fuel prices. He attributed this situation to escalating tensions between Iran and the United States.
He explained that these tensions have resulted in a significant number of oil tankers being stranded at sea, disrupting oil supply and impacting international markets.
Bhujbal noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in continuous contact with other nations to secure more oil for India. He stated that even if petrol and diesel prices have increased by two to three rupees, India’s situation remains better compared to many other countries.
Regarding kerosene availability, Bhujbal mentioned that Maharashtra currently has approximately 3,450 kiloliters of kerosene, with distribution already underway in several districts.
He added that the previous distribution system for kerosene vendors is being reactivated to ensure that it reaches those in need. Additionally, he announced that the process for granting permits to new kerosene sellers has been initiated.
On the farmers’ issue, Bhujbal explained that the purchase of rice, maize, and other crops is conducted at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) set by the central government. State federations and tribal boards are responsible for buying produce from farmers.
He revealed that approximately ₹3,200 crore is pending for farmers. This delay in payment from the central government has been addressed, as Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has authorized immediate payments from the state government to provide relief to farmers.
Supporting the statement made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Bhujbal asserted that Naxalism in the country is nearly eradicated, including in Maharashtra. He noted that Naxalite activities in the state have significantly diminished.
