India’s Innovation-Driven Growth Journey Remains Promising Despite Global Turmoil: WIPO Economist

Dalian, June 23: Carsten Fink, the chief economist of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), stated on Tuesday that despite geopolitical tensions and economic disruptions caused by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, India’s long-term economic prospects remain positive. He emphasized that the country’s rapidly growing innovation ecosystem and robust economic foundation are strengthening its future.

During a discussion at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting, dubbed ‘Summer Davos,’ Fink noted that the most significant impact of the Middle East crisis on the global economy is reflected in rising commodity prices, particularly crude oil and essential goods like fertilizers.

He remarked, “In the short term, the Indian economy has been affected by this crisis, as India is heavily reliant on oil imports. However, the momentum and dynamism observed in India’s innovation sector are highly encouraging. The Indian economy is achieving growth rates rarely seen in other middle-income countries, while its long-term innovation capacity continues to develop.”

Fink pointed out that despite these challenges, the global economy has shown remarkable resilience. However, he warned that the economic situation in the coming months will largely depend on developments in the Middle East.

He highlighted that trade traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and its impact on commodity prices will significantly influence the direction of the global economy.

Fink stated, “Despite this shock, the global economy has demonstrated considerable resilience.”

He further added that the trajectory of inflation and the policies of various countries’ central banks will play a crucial role in shaping the short-term and medium-term future of the global economy.

Carsten Fink also praised India’s growing innovation capacity, stating that through technological advancements and innovation, India is laying a strong foundation for sustainable development.

He concluded, “In the short term, the Indian economy is certainly facing some challenges, but there are many strong reasons to be optimistic about India’s long-term prospects.”

According to Fink, India’s rapidly evolving innovation ecosystem, technological advancements, and strong economic growth rate could position the country as a key engine of growth in the global economy in the future. This is why, despite current global uncertainties, India’s long-term economic narrative remains a beacon of hope for the world.
