
Perth, May 30: The Indian women’s hockey team faced a narrow defeat against Australia in the final match of their four-game series, losing 2-3. The series concluded in a 2-2 draw.
The Indian team started strong, taking the lead just two minutes into the match. Navneet Kaur converted a penalty corner, putting early pressure on Australia. In the second quarter, Deepika Soreng doubled India’s advantage with a brilliant goal in the 23rd minute, leaving the halftime score at 2-0.
Australia made a fierce comeback in the third quarter, with Abby Wilson (42′) and Olivia Downs (44′) scoring in quick succession to level the match. In the final minutes, Courtney Shonl’s goal (58′) secured the win for the host team, ending the match at 3-2.
Despite the loss, the tour has been positive for the Indian team. After losing the first match, they bounced back with victories in the next two games, taking a 2-1 lead in the series. The second match was won in a shootout (4-2), while the third match ended with a 2-0 score. The team displayed remarkable tenacity, strategic discipline, and strong attacking play.
The Indian team’s experience from this series will be beneficial as they prepare for the FIH Nations Cup in New Zealand. Previously, the team also performed well in Argentina, where they faced early losses in the first two matches of a four-game series but managed to equalize it 2-2 with wins in the last two matches.
