New Delhi, August 2: The Indian weightlifting team returned home on Sunday after making the nation proud at the Commonwealth Games 2026. Mirabai Chanu, who won a gold medal in Glasgow, expressed her joy over her performance. Lovepreet Singh thanked the citizens for their support.
Fans gathered at Indira Gandhi Airport in Delhi well before the athletes’ arrival, eagerly waiting to welcome their favorite players. As the athletes exited the airport, they received a grand reception, complete with garlands and lively drumbeats.
In a conversation with reporters, Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu shared her happiness about winning the gold medal for her country. She expressed pride in her achievement, lifting a total of 190 kilograms in the 48-kilogram category. This marks her third consecutive gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.
Lovepreet Singh, who secured a silver medal in the 110-plus category, expressed his delight in an interview, stating that he was thrilled to have improved from his bronze medal win at the last Commonwealth Games. He thanked the Indian Navy and all citizens for their support.
Currently employed in the Navy, Lovepreet specifically acknowledged his captain, Vijay Kumar. He mentioned that his family was eagerly awaiting his return and expressed hope of winning a gold medal in the next competition. Lovepreet lifted a total of 388 kilograms, just one kilogram shy of the gold medal.
Weightlifter Gyaneshwari Yadav, who won a silver medal in the 53-kilogram category, shared her excitement about returning to India with a medal. She noted that her family was eagerly waiting for her. Gyaneshwari expressed her determination to strive for gold at the Commonwealth Games scheduled to be held in India in 2030. Rishikant Singh, who also won a silver medal in weightlifting, shared his happiness upon returning home with the medal.
