Purī, March 7: Sudarshan Patnaik, the Padma Shri award-winning sand artist from Odisha, has proudly represented India at the 18th Contemporary Venice 2026 exhibition. He is the only Indian artist participating in this prestigious event.
The exhibition is being held at the Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello in Venice and is organized by the It’s Liquid Group in collaboration with the ACEIT Venice—Italian-German Cultural Association.
Under the supervision of curator Luca Curci, the exhibition features nearly 80 artists from over 30 countries showcasing their artworks.
For the first time at this international exhibition, Patnaik presented his “Jugbandi” paintings. This series combines natural sand and color on canvas, symbolizing his artistic journey from early painting hobbies to globally recognized sand sculptures.
The paintings depict themes of nature, human emotions, environmental balance, and harmony between humanity and the Earth.
Over the past five years, Patnaik has developed mixed-media art by blending sand and paint. This unique combination highlights the ephemeral nature of sand alongside the permanence of canvas. His recent exhibitions in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, and New Delhi have received enthusiastic responses from audiences and art lovers.
During the inauguration, Patnaik’s paintings captivated both the audience and international artists. Curator Luca Curci and the director of the It’s Liquid Group praised his “Jugbandi” paintings.
Through these artworks, Sudarshan Patnaik conveys that the beauty of nature and humanity’s responsibilities are deeply interconnected. His art serves as a reminder that creativity can be a powerful medium for environmental awareness, cultural harmony, and global responsibility.
Notably, Patnaik often creates sand sculptures at Neeladri Beach in Puri, Odisha, and his works are renowned worldwide. Last year, he set a new world record by creating the “World’s Largest Santa Claus Sand Sculpture” during Christmas.
