Lucknow, September 19 (Daily Kiran) : Indian Railways has taken a significant step towards enhancing rail safety by approving the expansion of the Kavach version 4.0 project in Uttar Pradesh. On Saturday, the railway announced that it has sanctioned the implementation of this project in the Lucknow division of the Northeast Railway at a cost of ₹252 crores, covering 607.7 route kilometers.
An official statement described this initiative as a crucial advancement in the deployment of an indigenous technology-based rail safety system. The Kavach 4.0 system will be made available on the remaining identified rail segments in the Lucknow division, thereby strengthening the safety framework during train operations.
Kavach is an automatic train protection (ATP) system developed by Indian Railways. Its primary goal is to enhance the safety of train operations and prevent accidents caused by human errors. The system aids in preventing incidents such as signal passed at danger (SPAD) and can automatically apply brakes when necessary, ensuring safe operations while monitoring train activities.
According to the railway authorities, this initiative is part of an ongoing process to expand the Kavach system across the entire rail network. The aim is to modernize train safety systems and enhance the safety and reliability of railway operations.
In addition, Indian Railways has also approved a project to install electronic interlocking (EI) systems at seven stations in the Solapur division of the Central Railway. This project will cost ₹209 crores.
The railway stated that this modern signaling system will strengthen the signaling infrastructure in the Solapur division and facilitate the effective implementation of indigenous safety systems like Kavach.
Electronic interlocking is a modern computer-based signaling system that replaces traditional relay-based interlocking. It enhances the reliability of points and signals, reduces the time required for fault detection and repair, and simplifies maintenance.
Under the approved project, the electronic interlocking system will be installed at the Mohol, Mundhewadi, Bale, Solapur, Hotgi Junction-Hotgi A Cabin, Shahabad, and Wadi Junction stations. These stations are located on the high-density network (HDN-7) route, where projects for Kavach, automatic block signaling (ABS), and centralized traffic control (CTC) have already been approved.
The statement further noted that this project is part of ongoing efforts to enhance safety on high-density rail routes, modernize the signaling system, and improve operational efficiency. It is expected to make rail operations safer, faster, and more reliable.
