Muscat, August 16: The Indian Navy announced on Sunday that its ships marked India’s maritime presence at various foreign ports, including Muscat, Ponta Delgada, and Djibouti, in celebration of Independence Day.
In a post on the social media platform X, the Navy stated, “With the tricolor flying high, the Indian Navy has conveyed India’s spirit across the seas. Our ships celebrated the 80th Independence Day at foreign ports such as Djibouti, Muscat, and Ponta Delgada. The national flag waved proudly, symbolizing India’s maritime presence, pride, and enduring bonds of friendship.”
The Visakhapatnam-class destroyer INS Imphal hoisted the tricolor during its port call in Muscat, Oman.
The Indian Embassy in Muscat shared on X, “Celebrating 80 years of freedom. A legacy that continues. As India marks 80 years of independence, the tricolor proudly flew on INS Imphal, reaffirming the enduring ties of friendship and maritime cooperation between India and Oman.”
Prashant Pise, India’s Ambassador to Oman, visited the warship and congratulated the crew on this occasion. The ship’s crew also participated in a flag-hoisting ceremony organized at the embassy.
The Indian Navy’s sail training ship INS Sudarshini celebrated Independence Day during its port call in Ponta Delgada, located in Portugal’s Azores archipelago.
The Indian Embassy in Portugal posted on X, “INS Sudarshini celebrated India’s 80th Independence Day with pride and patriotism during its port call in Ponta Delgada, Azores. It was a memorable celebration of our nation’s spirit, heritage, and maritime traditions.”
The embassy also noted that the ship marked the day with a spectacular display of the tricolor lights. This symbolizes the enduring bonds of friendship, harmony, and maritime cooperation between India and Portugal. The Indian Navy reported that the vessel arrived in the Azores after a 19-day transatlantic journey from the United States, marking another significant milestone in the Lokayan 26 mission.
The Navy further stated, “INS Sudarshini reached Ponta Delgada in the Azores on August 13, 2026, after a 19-day transatlantic journey from Boston. This achievement strengthens the enduring maritime partnership between India and Portugal.”
Additionally, “The commanding officer of INS Sudarshini met with Commodore Luis Nicholson Lavarador, the commander of the Azores maritime area. Planned activities during the ship’s stay include professional discussions and cultural exchanges with the Portuguese Navy, enhancing professional cooperation and mutual goodwill between the two navies.”
