Beirut, August 16: Despite being far from home, the Indian battalion deployed under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) celebrated India’s 80th Independence Day with great enthusiasm and patriotism at the ‘Indbat’ headquarters, UNP 4-2 in Southern Lebanon.
The event was graced by the Indian Ambassador to Lebanon, His Excellency Mohammad Noor Rahman Sheikh, along with the Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Lebanon, His Excellency Rasul Jumali, the Ambassador of Lebanon to India, His Excellency Hadi Jaber, and UNIFIL Force Commander Major General Diodato Abagnara. Senior UNIFIL officials, the Lebanese military commander, mayors, local leaders, and commanders from the contributing nations were also present.
The ceremony commenced with the Indian Ambassador hoisting the national flag, followed by a grand military parade. The impressive attire of Indian soldiers, their precise drills, discipline, and military tactics were highly praised, reflecting the professionalism and high standards of the Indian Armed Forces.
The celebrations showcased India’s rich cultural heritage and diversity. Highlights included floats depicting Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore, yoga demonstrations, Bhangra performances, folk dances representing the colors of India, patriotic songs, and plays based on Mahatma Gandhi and Maharana Pratap. The military band’s performance and the display of military working dogs further highlighted the versatility and professional excellence of the Indian contingent.
Demonstrations of indigenous high mobility light tactical vehicles and military technology showcased India’s growing capabilities, innovation, and commitment to self-reliance in the defense sector.
Prior to these celebrations, several community and humanitarian initiatives took place, including medical, dental, and veterinary camps, distribution of medicines, summer camp activities for children, and educational sessions for women. These initiatives, conducted between August 1 and 15, 2026, reinforced the ‘Indbat’ commitment to serving the people of Southern Lebanon and strengthening ties with them.
This celebration was particularly significant as it brought together India, Lebanon, the United Nations, and the international peacekeeping community on one platform. It was a powerful example of India’s ‘soft power’, military professionalism, cultural diplomacy, and commitment to global peace.
In their addresses, the Indian Ambassador and the UNIFIL Force Commander praised the splendid parade, high levels of discipline, and vibrant presentation of India’s heritage, while also commending the ongoing dedication of ‘Indbat’ to its mission.
