New Delhi, March 19: The Indian Navy’s Marine Commandos (MARCOS) and the Seychelles Defense Forces have successfully completed critical operations, including boarding, search, and control of a maritime vessel. These missions are part of the joint military exercise ‘Lamitiye 2026.’
This exercise has demonstrated the capability of both forces to work together effectively in challenging situations. The 11th edition of the Lamitiye exercise, which began on March 9 in Seychelles, will continue until March 20. A highlight of the exercise was a 72-hour final test conducted on Praslin Island, featuring operations such as maritime infiltration, drone surveillance, raids, and casualty evacuation.
The Indian Armed Forces and Seychelles Defense Forces have enhanced their interoperability, operational coordination, and mutual understanding through this exercise. It primarily focused on semi-urban and maritime security scenarios.
Notably, the term ‘Lamitiye’ means friendship in Creole. This exercise symbolizes the deepening defense ties between India and Seychelles. The Seychelles Defense Forces coordinated participation from their Coast Guard, Air Force, and Special Operations units. The Indian side deployed the naval vessel INS Trikand for maritime operations. Throughout the exercise, both nations practiced joint planning, coordination, and various operations on land and at sea.
Key activities included the establishment of a joint operations center, conducting cordon and search operations in semi-urban areas, and precision strikes, showcasing a high level of synergy and mutual trust. The forces collaborated on various operations, reinforcing their coordination and confidence.
The exercise culminates with a 72-hour high-intensity validation phase on Praslin Island, during which joint amphibious operations, UAV-based surveillance, coordinated raids, and integrated casualty evacuation drills were successfully executed. This exercise validated strategies, techniques, and processes, strengthening unity and interoperability.
According to senior officials, ‘Lamitiye 2026’ is a strong testament to the growing defense cooperation between India and Seychelles, as well as their shared commitment to regional security, stability, and operational excellence in the Indian Ocean region.
