New Delhi, March 10: The Indian men’s basketball team is returning home after being stranded in Doha for ten days. The Basketball Federation of India (BFI) announced this on Tuesday.
The team had traveled to Doha for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian qualifiers but became trapped in the Qatari capital due to ongoing regional tensions. This situation disrupted international airspace and flight operations.
The Qatar Basketball Federation provided hotel accommodations and logistical support for the Indian team. They ensured the safety and security of the players and staff, collaborating with the Indian embassy to facilitate a safe return.
Initially, the team traveled by road to Dammam. Due to limited flight availability, they departed in two groups. One group flew from Dammam to Jeddah and then to Mumbai, while the other group headed directly to Lucknow.
The BFI stated that during this time, their president and secretary-general maintained constant communication with the FIBA Asia office, the Indian government, and the Indian embassy in Doha.
They emphasized, “Ensuring the team’s safe return was our top priority, and we were in continuous contact with the FIBA Asia office, the Indian government, and the Indian embassy throughout this process.”
The federation expressed gratitude for the support and assistance received during this challenging time, thanking FIBA Asia, the Qatar Basketball Federation, and the Indian embassies in Doha and Saudi Arabia for their invaluable help.
