New Delhi, September 12 (Daily Kiran) : Indian T20 captain Shreyas Iyer expressed optimism about his collaboration with head coach Gautam Gambhir, highlighting their effective communication and aggressive approach as key to future success. The first match of the T20 series against Afghanistan is set for September 13.
Iyer, who previously led the Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL title under Gambhir’s mentorship in 2024, emphasized the importance of clarity within the team. He noted that Gambhir’s aggressive mindset and ability to manage players are crucial for fostering confidence and understanding each player’s role.
The partnership between Iyer and Gambhir faced challenges early on, with India suffering losses in T20 series against Ireland and England. However, the team bounced back, sweeping Zimbabwe 3-0 in a recent series, where VVS Laxman served as interim head coach.
In a press conference ahead of the match, Iyer remarked, “His thinking is very aggressive. He is someone who always wants to win the moment he steps onto the field. He desires every player to perform well, which is natural for a coach. This instills a lot of trust and confidence in the team, and every player knows their role and what they need to do.”
Iyer further added, “These aspects are vital in coaching skills, and his method of personally handling players is exceptional. Building such relationships is essential for progressing in the tournament, as we all have different personalities and need to understand each player individually.”
He reflected on their shared experiences in understanding player dynamics, stating, “The more matches we win, the better we will know each other. I have worked with him before at KKR, and I understand how his mind works and what his approach will be.”
Looking ahead to the challenge posed by Afghanistan, whose players are familiar with Indian conditions due to their IPL experience, Iyer emphasized the need for the team to focus on one match at a time. He believes that concentrating on the present is vital for success.
“We will focus on each match individually. There’s no need to think too far ahead. We are concentrating on the first match. We know Afghanistan is a strong team, and our preparation has been good. The players are in excellent form and mindset. Therefore, we must stay present and ensure we perform well when the time comes. This is a great opportunity to play against a strong team before the Asian Games, and we are expecting a fantastic contest. We will play to our fullest potential,” he stated.
Iyer also expressed excitement about participating in his first Asian Games, where he aims to help India defend its gold medal and interact with athletes from various sports. “This is certainly an exciting time for me and the team, as it will be my first opportunity. Some players have participated in previous Asian Games. We are set to play our first match against Japan, making it a historic encounter. I look forward to mingling with hockey players and other Olympic athletes who will be there with us.”
