
Nairobi, June 23: The Indian High Commissioner to Kenya, Adarsh Swain, met with the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, Hon. Soipan Tuya, on Tuesday. The discussion focused on enhancing collaboration in climate action between the two nations.
The Indian High Commission in Nairobi shared the meeting details on the social media platform ‘X’, stating, “High Commissioner Adarsh Swain met with Hon. Soipan Tuya, Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry.”
The primary agenda was to strengthen cooperation in tackling climate change, forest conservation, and environmental protection. They also discussed aligning India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘One Tree for Mother’ initiative with Kenya’s President William Ruto’s ’15 Billion Trees Campaign.’
Both sides explored opportunities for joint environmental activities and enhancing partnerships between the forestry and environmental institutions of both countries.
Earlier this month, Prime Minister Modi emphasized that India and Kenya will continue to strengthen their long-standing partnership, which is rooted in the aspirations of the Global South. This statement followed his meeting with President Ruto.
The two leaders met during the G7 Summit, where India was invited as a partner country. Prime Minister Modi expressed his pleasure in meeting President Ruto and reiterated the commitment of both nations to work together for the welfare of their people.
India and Kenya share a rich historical and cultural relationship that dates back to before both nations gained independence. The Indian community in Kenya, comprising over 80,000 individuals, plays a significant role in strengthening ties between the two countries.
In recent years, India and Kenya have collaborated in various sectors, including trade, agriculture, education, defense, and health. Kenya is one of India’s key partners in Africa, with annual trade exceeding three billion US dollars. India exports medicines, machinery, and vehicles to Kenya, while importing tea, coffee, and leather products from the country.
