New Delhi, August 26: India’s Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, has extended an invitation to Canadian investors to participate in India’s growth journey. She highlighted various investment opportunities in sectors such as banking, insurance, fintech, semiconductors, rare earth elements, and other emerging fields.
While addressing a welcome ceremony for the Indian diaspora business community in Toronto, the Finance Minister emphasized the robust position of India’s scheduled commercial banks and the significant investments occurring in the banking sector.
In a post on the social media platform X, she noted that India’s financial sector, particularly banking and non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), is attracting international investment.
Sitharaman pointed out that India’s International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) at GIFT City has already attracted several foreign banks, with ample opportunities for more international financial institutions to establish operations there.
She stated, “The Indian government is committed to encouraging Canadian investors to come to India and establish deeper connections.”
The Finance Minister identified India’s large population, purchasing power, consumption, and demand as key factors making the country an attractive destination for investment.
In another post on X, she mentioned that India is creating new pathways for international capital through GIFT City, which is emerging as a global platform for international financial institutions.
She added that GIFT City’s regulatory and tax framework is specifically designed to facilitate cross-border financial activities.
Additionally, the insurance sector now allows 100% foreign direct investment (FDI). According to the Finance Minister, India’s leadership in the fintech sector is generating significant opportunities for global capital.
Sitharaman also highlighted emerging sectors such as semiconductors, magnets, and rare earth elements as areas with substantial potential for Canadian investors.
She concluded, “India can provide reliable and cost-effective supply chain options for global markets.”
According to the Finance Minister, these opportunities for Canadian institutional investors are not limited to participating in India’s growth journey but also extend to using India as a platform for broader regional and global financial activities.
