Guwahati, April 18: The Indian Army has organized a significant joint exercise to enhance disaster preparedness for flood-like situations in Assam. The ‘Exercise Water Relief’ was conducted by the Gajraj Corps’ Red Horns Division at IIT Guwahati. This exercise involved flood relief teams from the Indian Army, NDRF, SDRF, and SSB.
The primary aim of the exercise was to establish better coordination among various agencies and improve the capacity for rapid relief operations during severe flooding. Different flood relief methods were showcased during the exercise, including monitoring with drones, delivering food and supplies to stranded individuals, and safely rescuing those in danger. Teams from the Army, NDRF, and SDRF demonstrated rescue operations in deep water, working collaboratively under simulated flood conditions.
This exercise provided practical training for all involved agencies to conduct relief operations effectively and systematically. It clearly demonstrated the enhanced coordination and cooperation capabilities among different departments during disaster scenarios. Senior officials from the Army, including Lieutenant General Neeraj Shukla (AVSM, SM), the General Officer Commanding of the Gajraj Corps, along with state administration, SSB, CAPF, and disaster relief organization officials, observed the exercise.
Approximately 800 spectators, including flood relief teams from the Indian Army, NCC and NSS cadets, and students from various schools and colleges in Guwahati, closely watched the proceedings. Lieutenant General Neeraj Shukla reviewed the preparations of the flood relief teams and addressed the audience. He emphasized the necessity of adopting a ‘whole society’ approach to disaster management, highlighting the four ‘P’s: Predict, Prepare, Protect, and Provide.
General Shukla called on the Army, SSB, NDRF, SDRF, and NCC cadets to enhance public participation in nation-building. He stressed the importance of regular joint training among different agencies, updating standard operating procedures, and focusing on capacity building.
The programs demonstrated during the exercise instilled a sense of trust and security in the audience towards the Army and other relief agencies. People felt reassured that all agencies are prepared to ensure their safety during any natural disaster. The core mantra of ‘Exercise Water Relief’—’Organized Strength for Public Disaster Safety’—has been further reinforced. All participating agencies have now committed to continuing regular joint training and improving disaster management efforts.
