New Delhi: Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi is on a significant official visit to Sri Lanka, focusing on enhancing defence cooperation and military relations between the two nations.
During his visit, General Dwivedi held important meetings with senior Sri Lankan military leadership, including the Defence Secretary and Deputy Defence Minister. The discussions emphasized strengthening bilateral defence collaboration and fostering closer army-to-army ties.
On the second and final day of his trip, the Army Chief met with Sri Lanka’s Deputy Defence Minister, retired Major General Aruna Jayasekara, and Defence Secretary, retired Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyakontha. The talks aimed to deepen India-Sri Lanka defence cooperation and promote joint efforts in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.
This engagement reflects the shared commitment of both countries towards regional security, stability, and a long-term defence partnership. Earlier, General Dwivedi inspected the Guard of Honour at the Sri Lanka Army Headquarters in Colombo and met with Army Commander Lieutenant General B.K.G.M. Lasantha Rodrigo. Their discussions highlighted the importance of enhancing defence ties, strengthening military cooperation, and reaffirming mutual dedication to peace and security in the region.
As part of this visit, India handed over military vehicles, ambulances, and training simulators to Sri Lanka, reinforcing defence collaboration and the longstanding friendship and trust between the two nations. Defence experts view this visit as a clear indication of growing defence relations and joint efforts to maintain peace and stability in the Indian Ocean region.
Recently, Sri Lanka suffered severe damage due to a devastating cyclone accompanied by heavy floods, causing significant loss of life and property. Since then, the Indian Army has been actively involved in relief and rescue operations, providing treatment to over 5,000 people under Operation Sagar Bandhu.
The Indian Army has established a state-of-the-art field hospital in one of the most affected areas, offering medical care to thousands facing health challenges. Additionally, the Army has repaired damaged bridges and roads to facilitate rescue and relief efforts.
