India Triumphs Over New Zealand in Thrilling T20 Opener, Iyer Praises Batting Performance

India secured a thrilling 4-wicket victory against New Zealand in the first T20 match, with captain Iyer praising the teams batting prowess.

Christchurch, October 22 (Daily Kiran) : India clinched a thrilling 4-wicket victory against New Zealand in the first T20 International match held in Christchurch. Chasing a formidable target of 226 runs, the Indian batsmen showcased their skills, reaching the target with two balls to spare.

Captain Shreyas Iyer expressed his delight at the team’s performance following the match. He credited the batsmen for their success, stating, “It was a fantastic win. When we started bowling, I felt the pitch was playing a bit slow. The ball was coming onto the bat slowly, and we bowled a bit too full instead of maintaining the right hard length. However, as the game progressed, the dew came in, and the ball started coming onto the bat better, allowing them to reach 220 runs. Their efforts deserve praise, but we also needed a strong start, especially when chasing 220 runs. Scoring 80-85 runs in the first six overs was an excellent beginning.”

When asked if he or the team management provided any specific instructions to Sanju Samson and Abhishek, Iyer noted their experience. “They are quite seasoned players. They know how to play and don’t need guidance from me. Once they find their rhythm, it’s about maintaining that momentum, and today was a great example of that. It doesn’t happen every time, but when they hit their stride, they lay a strong foundation for the rest of the team to build on and ensure we finish the match with a win.”

Iyer also praised Naman Dheer for his impactful performance, saying, “Absolutely. He gives us many options, especially against left-handers or even right-handers. Bowling a couple of crucial overs on this ground can change the momentum of the entire match. Personally, I think he showed great composure today. Watching him bat was truly impressive.”

Dheer played a pivotal role in the latter stages of the match, scoring an explosive 42 runs off just 15 balls, with a remarkable strike rate of 280. During his innings, he hit five fours and two sixes. Meanwhile, Sanju Samson contributed significantly with 67 runs from 33 balls, including eight fours and four sixes.
