India Shines at Under-23 Asian Wrestling Championship: Sagar and Suraj Reach Finals

New Delhi, May 23: India has made a strong start at the United World Wrestling (UWW) Under-23 Asian Championship. On Saturday, at the Tien Son Sports Center in Da Nang, Vietnam, Greco-Roman wrestlers Sagar Singh and Suraj secured their spots in the gold medal matches.

The Indian wrestlers excelled in the 67 kg and 60 kg Greco-Roman categories. Both athletes displayed aggressive tactics while maintaining composure under pressure, ensuring their places in the finals.

Sagar Singh showcased exceptional skill in the 67 kg category. He demonstrated strategic discipline and consistency throughout the early rounds, ultimately reaching the gold medal match. He will be joined in the finals by Suraj, who also secured his spot in the title bout in the 60 kg category.

In the 77 kg category, Kumar Sachin faced a tough challenge but narrowly lost to Alikhan Durshonov in a closely contested semifinal. Meanwhile, Indian wrestlers in the 72 kg and 82 kg categories were unable to advance past the initial rounds.

Praising the wrestlers, Sanjay Singh, President of the Indian Wrestling Federation, stated, “I congratulate the wrestlers who have reached the finals. The competition level here in Vietnam is extremely high. Our athletes are demonstrating remarkable determination and fighting spirit on the mat. We take pride in the hard work they have put into preparing for this championship. We wish our finalists and the entire team competing in the coming days the best of luck.”

India’s Greco-Roman campaign will continue on Sunday with qualification matches across various weight categories. Neeraj will kick off the challenge in the 55 kg category, followed by Sumit in the 63 kg and Rohit in the 87 kg category. All three wrestlers aim to reach the quarter-finals.
