New Delhi, March 13: The government announced on Friday that domestic production of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in India has surged by nearly 30%. This increase comes despite ongoing tensions in the Middle East, ensuring a stable fuel supply in the country.
Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, stated during an inter-ministerial briefing that refineries are now producing approximately 30% more LPG compared to March 5.
She emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring uninterrupted LPG supply to households and essential institutions. Priority is being given to homes, hospitals, and educational institutions for LPG distribution.
Sharma also mentioned that commercial gas cylinders have been made available to state governments, allowing them to distribute these based on priority needs.
The government reassured citizens that India possesses sufficient refining capacity and fuel reserves. The current crude oil refining capacity stands at 258 million metric tons, with refineries operating at full capacity.
As a result, India has nearly achieved self-sufficiency in petrol and diesel production, reducing the need for imports. Sharma confirmed that there is no shortage of petrol or diesel across the country, with no reports of fuel running out at any of the approximately 100,000 petrol pumps.
She noted that petrol pumps are functioning normally and have adequate fuel stock. Refineries also have a sufficient reserve of crude oil, ensuring smooth operations.
Additionally, the supply of piped natural gas (PNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) remains stable. Sharma reported that the supply of PNG for households and CNG for vehicles is ongoing without interruptions.
Currently, around 15 million homes are connected to the PNG network, with approximately 6 million additional homes near gas pipelines eligible for easy PNG connections.
She encouraged consumers to adopt PNG to help alleviate pressure on LPG demand.
