India-EU Free Trade Deal Welcomed by Priyanka Chaturvedi, Takes a Dig at Trump

New Delhi: The long-awaited India-European Union (EU) Free Trade Agreement (FTA) has received positive responses in political circles. Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi warmly welcomed the deal, calling it a ‘win-win’ for both sides. She also took a witty dig at former US President Donald Trump, terming the agreement a catalyst in overcoming hesitation.

On the social media platform X, Priyanka Chaturvedi posted, “Welcome to the EU-India FTA deal, which comes after two decades of talks and hesitation. The moment long awaited has finally turned into a win-win deal for both.”

Addressing Donald Trump, she wrote, “Many thanks to US President Donald Trump for being the catalyst in removing hesitation! Hopefully, these two regions, which believe in democracy, shared prosperity, rules-based order, and the values of global trade, will continue to empower each other during these challenging times.”

This remark comes in the context of Trump’s aggressive trade policies. Last year, Trump imposed additional tariffs on India citing its oil purchases from Russia and participation in BRICS. He had also threatened tariffs on European countries, especially over the Greenland acquisition issue. The India-EU FTA is thus seen as a reaction to Trump’s policies, marking a shift towards reducing US-centric dependence in global trade.

The agreement, dubbed the ‘Mother of All Deals’, was finalised at the India-EU Summit on 27 January 2026. Announced in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and EU leaders Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa, the deal covers nearly 25 percent of global GDP. It is expected to significantly boost trade between the two sides. Indian exports such as textiles, gems and jewellery, leather, and marine products will gain duty-free access, while tariffs on EU automobiles, industrial goods, wine, and chocolates will be reduced.
