Mumbai, September 8 (Daily Kiran) : India is rapidly establishing itself as a leader in digital infrastructure and internet security, according to industry experts at the 62nd Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC) meeting held in Mumbai. The event showcased a strong confidence among policymakers and industry leaders regarding the country’s expanding digital economy.
Sushil Pal, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, emphasized that the internet has evolved beyond mere communication. It now serves as a crucial infrastructure supporting most government services. He noted the increasing significance of the internet in national security and defense.
As more individuals connect to the internet and technologies like artificial intelligence and quantum computing advance, cybersecurity challenges are also on the rise. Pal pointed out that cybercriminals are utilizing sophisticated technologies to launch new forms of attacks and fraud. The government is actively collaborating with technical experts to strengthen cybersecurity, particularly focusing on internet routing security to prevent route hijacking and network disruptions.
Devesh Tyagi, CEO of the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI), highlighted the significance of hosting the APNIC meeting in India after a gap of 12 years. He expressed pride in the event, which provides Indian internet service providers (ISPs) with opportunities to connect with international network operators. This collaboration sends a strong message globally about India’s commitment to creating a secure, reliable, and inclusive internet ecosystem.
Rajesh Chharia, President of the Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI), mentioned that the establishment of the National Internet Registry (IRINN) in collaboration with NIXI in 2012 has accelerated internet expansion in the country. He noted that India’s internet penetration has reached unprecedented levels, attracting global companies seeking investment and partnership opportunities in the rapidly growing digital economy.
Kenny Huang, Chair of the APNIC Executive Council, remarked that the Asia-Pacific region is currently a hotspot for global digital development and technological innovation. He praised India as a prime example, citing the remarkable transformation of the country over the past decade due to government policies supporting technology, investment in digital infrastructure, and the promotion of artificial intelligence.
The discussions at the APNIC meeting underscore India’s potential as a major player in the digital landscape, highlighting the importance of collaboration between global and Indian digital companies to foster growth and innovation.
