New Delhi, May 21: India has raised concerns about Pakistan’s double standards, stating that while it advocates for international law, it simultaneously perpetrates brutal attacks on Afghan civilians. These assaults occurred during the holy month of Ramadan, targeting individuals leaving mosques after evening prayers.
India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, P. Harish, addressed the Security Council, citing a report from the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). The report revealed that in the first three months of 2026, 750 civilians were killed or injured due to cross-border military actions by the Pakistani army, primarily from airstrikes.
During an open debate on “Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflict,” chaired by China, Harish responded to anti-India remarks made by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, who had raised the Kashmir issue.
Harish emphasized, “The world understands Pakistan’s propaganda. It lacks credibility, respect for law, and morality.” He pointed out the irony of Pakistan, a nation with a history of atrocities, commenting on India’s internal affairs. He criticized the hypocrisy of advocating for international law while simultaneously targeting innocent civilians in the shadows.
He referenced a UNAMA report released on May 10, which detailed an attack on a drug rehabilitation center in Afghanistan. He stated that during the sacred month of Ramadan in March, when people were in a spirit of peace and reflection, Pakistan conducted a brutal airstrike on Kabul’s Omid Addiction Treatment Hospital.
According to UNAMA, this shameful and inhumane attack resulted in the deaths of 269 civilians and injured 122 others. The facility could not be classified as a military target in any sense.
Harish noted that these airstrikes occurred just after the Taraweeh prayers, as many patients were exiting the mosque. He also highlighted that over 94,000 people have been forced to become refugees in Afghanistan due to Pakistan’s cross-border violence.
He remarked that such violent actions by Pakistan are not new. This is the same country that has bombed its own people and systematically committed genocide. He recalled the atrocities during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, where Pakistan executed organized massacres and committed mass rapes against four hundred thousand women during Operation Searchlight.
