New Delhi, August 12: On World Elephant Day, leaders across India emphasized the importance of conserving wild elephants and acknowledged their role in the country’s rich biodiversity. Union Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh took to social media to highlight that India is home to nearly 60 percent of the world’s wild Asian elephants, symbolizing our ecological heritage.
He stated, “Under Prime Minister Modi‘s leadership, India’s commitment to elephant sanctuary conservation is evident. We have 33 elephant reserves across 14 states, protecting vital habitats and migration routes.”
Singh further explained, “Elephants are ecosystem engineers. As they roam, they disperse seeds over long distances, promoting new plant growth. Each step they take helps maintain balance in nature. Let us unite to protect and conserve these gentle giants.”
Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh’s Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan remarked, “Elephants are not just majestic creatures of the forest; they are guardians of our jungles and integral to India’s natural heritage.” This information was shared by the Deputy Chief Minister’s office.
Kalyan reiterated his commitment to protecting these gentle giants and their habitats on World Elephant Day. He noted that Project Elephant, strengthened under PM Modi’s leadership, reflects our national resolve to safeguard elephants, their habitats, and promote harmonious coexistence between people and wildlife.
He also praised the efforts of Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav for advancing India’s wildlife conservation agenda.
Discussing initiatives in Andhra Pradesh, Kalyan mentioned the Kumki elephants and HANUMAN (Wildlife Monitoring, Assistance, and Care Units) program, which includes trained field teams, rescue infrastructure, technology, and rapid response to make wildlife conservation more effective and humane.
“Our approach is simple: secure communities, protected forests, and elephants roaming freely in safe habitats. Let’s ensure these gentle giants continue to walk in our forests and inspire future generations to respect, protect, and live in harmony with nature. Protect elephants. Protect forests. Protect our future.”
