
New Delhi, June 20: The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has announced the appointment of Vishwas Vidhu Sapkal as the new Ambassador to Slovakia. In an official statement, the ministry confirmed that Sapkal will soon take on this new role.
Currently serving as the Indian Ambassador to Peru, Sapkal is a 1998 batch Indian Foreign Service officer who graduated in Electronics Engineering from Walchand Engineering College in Maharashtra.
According to information from the official website of the Indian Embassy in Peru, before his tenure in Peru, he held positions as the High Commissioner to Fiji and as Consul General in St. Petersburg, Russia. Additionally, he has worked in various capacities in Moscow, Chicago, Yerevan (Armenia), and Cairo (Egypt).
India has maintained strong relations with Slovakia since its formation in 1993, and these ties have recently been elevated to a broader partnership level.
Notably, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Slovakia on June 15, 2026, at the invitation of Prime Minister Robert Fico. This visit marked the first by an Indian Prime Minister since Slovakia gained independence. During the visit, both leaders engaged in deep discussions to enhance bilateral cooperation and expand partnerships. The goal of this extensive collaboration is to elevate bilateral relations to a new level, strengthen existing cooperation mechanisms, and explore new opportunities for deepening bilateral and multilateral partnerships.
Recognizing the growing geopolitical, economic, and technological significance of the Indo-Pacific region, both leaders acknowledged the importance of stronger partnerships between India and Slovakia for mutual benefit, regional connectivity, free international trade, freedom of navigation, peaceful resolution of disputes, and support for a rules-based international order.
