India and Zimbabwe Strengthen Defense Ties in First Joint Defense Committee Meeting

New Delhi, June 5: The inaugural meeting of the India-Zimbabwe Joint Defense Committee (JDC) took place on June 4 in New Delhi. Both nations agreed to enhance bilateral defense relations by expanding existing cooperation in areas such as training, assistance, and the maintenance of common aerial assets.

Delegations from both countries also discussed new avenues for collaboration, including joint manufacturing, counter-terrorism, border management, and peacekeeping initiatives.

The meeting was co-chaired by Amitabh Prasad, Joint Secretary from India, and Aaron Daniel Tonde Nepera, Permanent Secretary from Zimbabwe. A high-level 12-member delegation from Zimbabwe is currently on a two-day visit to India, led by Permanent Secretary Aaron. The Indian delegation included representatives from the Army, the Department of Defense Production, and the Armed Forces Medical Services.

The partnership in the defense sector between India and Zimbabwe has been steadily growing. The outcomes of the first JDC meeting aim to implement the objectives outlined in the defense cooperation memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by the defense ministers of both countries during Aero India 2025.

The Zimbabwean delegation also visited the DPSU building in New Delhi, where they discussed potential areas of mutual cooperation with representatives from the Indian defense industry.

Additionally, Aaron Daniel Tonde Nepera began his visit by paying tribute to fallen soldiers at the National War Memorial in New Delhi.

In a separate development, Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe were elected as non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Wednesday. Their term will last for two years.

According to the Xinhua news agency, there were seven candidates vying for five seats this year, with Austria, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe being selected in the first round of voting.
