New Delhi, October 14 (Daily Kiran) : In a significant diplomatic engagement, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar met with Nepal’s Home Minister Sudhan Gurung in New Delhi on October 14. The two leaders focused on strengthening the bilateral relationship between their nations.

Sharing insights from the meeting on social media, Jaishankar expressed his pleasure in meeting Gurung. This discussion comes at a time when both countries are keen to enhance collaboration and security cooperation.

The day before, during the inaugural “Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation” (BIMSTEC) Home Ministers’ meeting, Indian Home Minister Amit Shah also interacted with Gurung. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepen bilateral cooperation.

In a post on social media, Shah noted, “It was a pleasure to meet Nepal’s Home Minister Sudhan Gurung during the first BIMSTEC Home Ministers’ meeting in New Delhi. We reiterated our commitment to enhance bilateral cooperation and strengthen close ties between India and Nepal for peace, progress, and prosperity in our region.”

According to the Nepalese Embassy in India, Gurung expressed gratitude for India’s timely assistance following recent floods and landslides in Nepal. He emphasized the need for practical cooperation based on sovereign equality, mutual respect, and trust for the benefit of both nations.

The meeting primarily focused on enhancing bilateral security cooperation, coordinating border management, addressing international crimes, and improving disaster preparedness and response capabilities.

During his address at the BIMSTEC Home Ministers’ meeting, Gurung thanked India for its hospitality and acknowledged the solidarity shown by member countries during recent disasters in Nepal. He reiterated Nepal’s commitment to regional cooperation against terrorism and international crime, highlighting the importance of secure information sharing, coordinated responses, and timely implementation of commitments.

Additionally, Gurung proposed establishing a regional framework for disaster preparedness and response, supported by a joint task force to strengthen collective capacity.

The meeting concluded with the adoption of the “Delhi Declaration,” which emphasizes collaborative action against terrorism, funding of terrorism, radicalization, drug trafficking, human trafficking, cybercrime, and organized crime. Shah remarked that this historic declaration advances Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for sustainable peace, security, and prosperity in the Bay of Bengal region, moving towards a safer, stronger, and better-connected area.
