New Delhi, July 1: The 11th staff talks between the Indian Navy and the Royal Malaysian Navy took place in New Delhi on Wednesday. The discussions focused on enhancing cooperation, strengthening maritime partnerships, and working together for maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
An Indian Navy spokesperson announced on the social media platform ‘X’, stating, “The 11th staff talks between the Indian Navy and the Royal Malaysian Navy successfully concluded on July 1, 2026, in New Delhi.”
The talks were chaired by Rear Admiral Srinivas Maddula, ACNS (FCI), and Rear Admiral Dato’ Pahlawan Mohd Fazli Kamal bin Mohd Mohldin, Assistant Chief of Staff (Ops and Training) of the Royal Malaysian Navy. The discussions emphasized strengthening ties between the two nations, enhancing maritime cooperation, and collaborative efforts for maritime security in the IOR.
Earlier in May, the Indian Navy’s research vessel INS Sagardhwani arrived at Port Klang in Malaysia, where it participated in successful talks and cooperation programs with the Royal Malaysian Navy.
The Indian Navy reported that several professional and scientific discussions took place during this visit. Upon arrival at Port Klang on May 13, personnel from the Royal Malaysian Navy welcomed the ship.
During the INS Sagardhwani’s voyage, officials from both countries shared insights on modern hydrographic techniques, marine environmental research, and new technologies related to oceanography.
A team from the Royal Malaysian Navy’s Hydrographic Department also toured the ship and learned about the marine research systems in place.
The Indian Navy stated that the exchange program among expert officials included discussions on data-driven maintenance, assessment of technological changes, navigation safety equipment, and decision-making methods related to technology.
The commanding officer of INS Sagardhwani met with the Indian High Commissioner in Kuala Lumpur. They discussed the ship’s marine research mission and ways to further strengthen scientific collaboration between the two nations.
The Indian Navy emphasized, “This mission showcases the growing maritime relations between India and Malaysia and reaffirms the commitment of both navies to regional cooperation, knowledge sharing, and strengthening mutual professional ties.”
Defense relations between India and Malaysia have been steadily strengthening over the years. The foundation of this relationship was laid with a defense cooperation agreement (MoU) signed in 1993. This agreement opened avenues for collaboration in joint projects, defense production, procurement, logistics, maintenance cooperation, and training.
During Defense Minister Rajnath Singh’s visit to Malaysia in 2023, both countries agreed to amend the defense agreement established in 1993.
