India Aims for 100 Medals at Asian Para Games 2026, Says Coach Satyanarayan

Indian para-athletics coach Satyanarayan expresses confidence in the teams ability to win 100 medals at the Asian Para Games 2026.

Nagoya, October 18 (Daily Kiran) : Indian para athletics head coach Satyanarayan has expressed strong confidence in the team’s preparations as they head into the Asian Para Games 2026, which kick off this Sunday in Nagoya. The coach stated that India’s goal is to secure approximately 100 medals during the event.

Taking place from October 18 to 24, this continental multi-sport event will see India field a delegation of 168 athletes competing in 11 different sports. The team aims to surpass its historic performance at the previous Asian Para Games in Hangzhou in 2023, where it achieved a record 111 medals, including 29 gold, 31 silver, and 51 bronze, finishing fifth in the overall medal tally.

Speaking ahead of the opening ceremony, Satyanarayan noted the enthusiasm among the Indian athletes, who are eager to convert their rigorous preparations into successful outcomes. He emphasized that para athletics will play a crucial role in India’s medal campaign.

“We are targeting around 100 medals for India, and we are confident that our athletes possess the capability and determination to achieve this,” Satyanarayan stated. “We hope to secure six medals in athletics alone, including two to three gold medals. Nishad Kumar is also in great form, and we expect him to perform at his best, possibly setting a new record.”

The coach acknowledged the competitive nature of the Games, with top athletes from across Asia participating. However, he assured that the Indian team is fully prepared and focused on delivering their best performances to win medals and elevate the nation’s pride.

The athletes are pleased with the arrangements made in Nagoya, including facilities, accommodations, and support, which have fostered a positive environment for the team. “The spirit of confidence among the squad is strong, and everyone is eager to give their best for the country,” he added.

India’s para-athletes have established a formidable presence on the international stage, with a mix of experienced medalists and emerging talents ready to make their mark at this major continental event. Notable names in the delegation include javelin thrower Sumit Antil, para-badminton champion Pramod Bhagat, para-shooter Avani Lekhara, para-archer Sheetal Devi, and sprinter Simran Sharma. Their performances will be pivotal in helping India achieve its objectives in the coming week.

The opening ceremony will take place at the Paloma Mizuho Stadium on Sunday, gathering athletes and delegations from across Asia for the official start of the Games. Pramod Bhagat and para-athlete Simran Sharma will carry the Indian flag, leading the national contingent in this continental sports event.

With the commencement of competitions following the opening ceremony, Indian athletes will strive to maintain their momentum on the field. The athletics events starting Monday will provide a prime opportunity for India to establish its rhythm. The team’s goal extends beyond increasing its medal count; it also aims to reinforce India’s position as a leading force in the Asian Para Games.
