Improve Your Eyesight with Simple Ayurvedic Eye Exercises

In today’s world, mobile phones, laptops, and televisions have become an integral part of our lives. Prolonged screen time often leads to common eye problems such as burning sensation, heaviness, blurred vision, and gradually weakening eyesight. Many people are becoming dependent on glasses at a young age.

According to Ayurveda, just as other body parts need exercise, eyes also require regular practice to stay healthy. Proper eye exercises help strengthen eye muscles and reduce fatigue.

Ayurveda associates the eyes with the Tejas element. Factors like improper daily routines, late-night wakefulness, excessive screen use, and stress disturb the Pitta dosha, which directly affects eye health. Eye exercises improve blood circulation, ensuring that oxygen and nutrients reach the eyes effectively. This is why regular practice can maintain eye function for a longer time.

One of the simplest and most effective exercises is blinking. Sit straight and blink rapidly 20 times, then close your eyes and rest for 10 seconds. This exercise helps reduce dryness and tiredness in the eyes. Another useful exercise is looking up and down. Without moving your head, slowly look upwards and then downwards 10 to 15 times to strengthen the eye muscles.

The third exercise involves looking right and left. Keep your head still and move your eyes to the right side, then to the left. This helps improve focus. Following this, rotate your eyes in circles—first clockwise, then anti-clockwise—five times each. This exercise relieves eye stiffness.

Trataka kriya is also highly valued in Ayurveda. Stare at the flame of a lamp or candle without blinking for 30 to 60 seconds. This practice enhances concentration and supports eye health. Additionally, washing eyes with cold water in the morning, cleaning them with rose water, and performing eye washes with Triphala water twice a week are beneficial.

Small lifestyle changes are equally important. Take breaks from screens every 20 minutes, get sufficient sleep, consume green vegetables and fruits, and spend some time daily looking at the distant open sky.
