Impeachment Proposal Against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth Introduced Amid Ongoing Iran Conflict

Washington, September 16 (Daily Kiran) : Republican Representative Thomas Massie has initiated an impeachment proposal against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, citing concerns over the ongoing conflict with Iran and Hegseth’s performance in office. During a speech in the House of Representatives, Massie accused Hegseth of committing “serious constitutional and legal violations.”

Massie asserted that Hegseth violated the 1973 War Powers Resolution, disregarded congressional directives aimed at ending U.S. military involvement in the Iran conflict, and failed to adhere to laws designed to minimize civilian casualties. He also alleged that Hegseth approved or monitored attacks on suspected drug traffickers without proper judicial processes.

According to Xinhua News Agency, Massie claimed that Hegseth has abused his powers. He noted that critics of the Trump administration have faced targeting for exercising their freedom of speech.

The war against Iran has now entered its seventh month, becoming increasingly unpopular among the American public, putting additional pressure on Republican lawmakers. It remains unclear how many Republicans and Democrats will support Massie’s impeachment proposal.

This action coincides with a report from The Hill, revealing that the Pentagon informed Congress last month that the cost of the Iran war has surpassed $42 billion, which is $4.5 billion more than the Department of Defense’s initial public estimate.

The House is expected to take action on Massie’s proposal by Thursday, leaving lawmakers with little time to deliberate. The chamber is set to adjourn for its traditional autumn recess ahead of the midterm elections later this month.

This is the second impeachment attempt against Hegseth; earlier in April, House Democrats introduced a six-count impeachment proposal.

Meanwhile, the White House expressed support for Hegseth on Tuesday. Following Massie’s impeachment proposal, Attorney General Todd Blanch told reporters that Hegseth is doing an excellent job.
