Mumbai, September 24 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has issued an apology concerning its earlier statement related to the death of student Sahil Wakode. The institution acknowledged that its previous communication, made on September 21, was inappropriate and has since been retracted.
In a post on the social media platform X, IIT Bombay stated, “We apologize for the remarks made in our earlier message regarding the unfortunate circumstances surrounding Sahil’s death. The details and conditions related to this incident are still under investigation by the relevant authorities. Given the ongoing inquiry, it was incorrect to share information or form opinions about events leading up to his death, as these matters have not yet been validated through the proper investigative process.”
Sahil Wakode, a second-year B.Tech student, tragically took his own life, prompting a series of protests by student organizations in recent days, which placed the institution under scrutiny. However, reports indicate that regular classes at IIT Bombay have resumed, and there are currently no protests taking place on campus.
The campus, home to over 12,000 students and more than 700 faculty members, is reported to be back to normal. Meanwhile, the Mumbai Crime Branch is investigating the case. On Tuesday, investigators recorded statements from Sahil’s parents and indicated that further questioning would occur to gather additional information.
Authorities revealed that Sahil owned an iPhone, which is currently locked. Technical assistance is being sought to access the device, as unlocking it will provide crucial data, including chat histories and other relevant information to verify claims made regarding the incident.
Additionally, police noted that IIT Bombay has both an SC-ST cell and a Student Counseling Center. They will inquire with these departments to determine if Sahil had ever lodged any complaints or received counseling.
