New Delhi: Once again, anger has erupted in the United States over actions by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials. On Saturday, federal immigration agents fatally shot a US citizen, marking the second such killing in the area within weeks. The incident followed the recent shooting of a woman by ICE agents in Minneapolis, triggering fresh protests and calls from local leaders demanding that the Trump administration cease ICE operations in the city.
The latest victim, ICU nurse Alex Pretty, was shot on a snowy road. Less than three weeks earlier, ICE officers had shot 37-year-old Reni Good in her car. Despite public outrage, US President Trump defended ICE’s actions, asserting they were acts of self-defense. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) pointed to a pistol and ammunition found with Pretty as justification.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated during a briefing that Pretty “was there to spread violence.” The White House also labelled Pretty a killer. Video footage from mobile phones has emerged, raising serious questions about the federal government’s account of the incident.
Widely broadcast by American media, the videos show Pretty filming agents and directing traffic on the icy street. One clip captures an ICE officer pushing a female protester to the sidewalk. Pretty then intervenes, spraying a chemical irritant at the agent’s face.
Following this, officers pull Pretty to the ground and attempt to detain her on the snowy road. When one officer suspects Pretty is armed, he retrieves a gun from her pants, prompting another agent to open fire. Subsequently, ICE officers fire multiple shots at Pretty’s motionless body from a distance.
Addressing the incident, US Vice President J.D. Vance wrote on social media platform X that during his visit to Minnesota, ICE sought to collaborate more closely with local law enforcement to maintain control on the ground. However, local leaders have so far refused these requests.
Regarding protests in Minneapolis, Vance added, “Such contrived chaos occurs only in Minneapolis. It is a direct result of far-left activists who refuse to work with local officials.”
