New Delhi: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed that Scotland will replace Bangladesh in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The announcement was made on Saturday following a meeting of ICC officials in Dubai.
Scotland Joins Group C Matches
Scotland will now compete in Group C alongside England, Italy, Nepal, and West Indies, taking Bangladesh’s place. Scotland qualified as the highest-ranked T20 team that had missed the tournament, finishing fourth in the qualifiers.
The team will play its group stage matches at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, facing West Indies on 7 February, Italy on 9 February, and England on 14 February. Its final group match against Nepal is scheduled for 17 February in Mumbai.
Security Concerns and ICC’s Response
Bangladesh had requested to move their group stage matches against India to Sri Lanka, citing security concerns after fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman was released from IPL 2026. However, ICC rejected this request after an independent security assessment found no credible threat to the Bangladesh team, officials, or supporters in India.
With the T20 World Cup starting on 7 February, the ICC stated that changing venues on short notice was not feasible.
Decision-Making Process and Official Statement
ICC Chairman Jay Shah and other officials met on Friday in Dubai and finalized the decision on Saturday. According to an ICC statement, the decision followed extensive discussions with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) over three weeks, including video conferences and face-to-face meetings.
The ICC conducted thorough reviews, incorporating inputs from internal and external security experts, and evaluated federal and state security arrangements along with enhanced protocols for the event.
The ICC emphasized that the decision was made after careful consideration of all factors and maintaining the original schedule was deemed appropriate. The BCB was given 24 hours to confirm whether their team would participate as scheduled in India. Following their inability to confirm participation, the ICC proceeded with Scotland as a replacement based on established governance and qualification procedures.
This development marks a significant change in the tournament lineup, ensuring the smooth conduct of the T20 World Cup 2026 as planned.
