Vienna, March 28: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed on Saturday that Iran reported new attacks on significant facilities, including the Khondab Heavy Water Research Reactor. The agency stated that these attacks posed no radiation risk, as there was no declared nuclear material present at the site. Iran informed the IAEA, and investigations revealed that there was no radiation leak even under unusual circumstances.
The IAEA announced on the social media platform X that Iran had notified them of an attack on the Khondab Heavy Water Production Plant. The agency remarked, “No radiation risk has been detected as there is no declared nuclear material at this facility.”
Iran also reported that the Khuzestan Steel Production Factory, which uses sealed radioactive sources like Cesium-137 (Cs-137) and Cobalt-60 (Co-60) for industrial measurement, was targeted. Officials confirmed that there were no reports of external radiation leaks, and the facility remains operational.
Earlier on Friday, the IAEA expressed concern over military activities near the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, marking the third such attack in the past ten days.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi warned that damage to a nuclear reactor could lead to a significant radiological crisis. However, the reactor in Bushehr remained secure, with no radiation leaks reported. These incidents have heightened international concerns regarding safety and nuclear security.
Grossi reiterated the call for all parties to exercise maximum restraint to prevent the risk of a nuclear accident.
The IAEA is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with Iranian officials to assess safety measures, ensuring that all nuclear materials remain secure.
These latest attacks highlight the increasing risks to nuclear and industrial facilities in regions affected by military tensions. While the Khondab Heavy Water Plant and Khuzestan Steel Factory are currently safe, experts warn that repeated attacks on facilities with radioactive materials could have severe consequences if not managed carefully.
Local and international stakeholders continue to urge for strict security measures to prevent any accidental release of hazardous materials.
