Hundreds Participate in Mourning Procession for Muharram in Srinagar

Srinagar, June 24: Hundreds of Shia Muslims gathered in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on Wednesday to participate in a mourning procession for Muharram. Authorities implemented extensive security measures to ensure the event proceeded smoothly and peacefully.

The procession began at Guru Bazaar and concluded in the Dalgate area. Volunteers set up refreshment stalls along the route, and black flags adorned the streets.

Many participants, dressed in black, mourned the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, by beating their chests. Volunteers provided water and cold drinks at refreshment stalls, while the medical department established temporary camps to offer healthcare services along the procession route.

Mourners sang lamentations in memory of the martyrs of Karbala. The procession moved in an orderly manner through Budshah Chowk and Maulana Azad Road, reaching Dalgate.

To facilitate the movement of participants, traffic department officials implemented special route regulations, ensuring the procession could proceed without traffic interruptions and providing alternative routes for those coming from outside the city.

Parking arrangements were made for those joining the procession from areas away from Batmaloo and the procession route. There were no untoward incidents during the event, as senior civil and police officials were present to oversee the proceedings.

Shia scholar Masroor Abbas Ansari stated, “Muharram is observed according to the times and circumstances. Each Muharram brings a special message. This year’s Muharram carries a message as we commemorate it for the first time without our leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This Muharram comes just days after Ayatollah Khamenei’s martyrdom, which has infused the people with a unique enthusiasm and energy.”

Since the onset of terrorism in Kashmir in the 1990s, authorities had banned Muharram processions. However, with improving conditions, officials have permitted this traditional procession for the past three years.

According to Shia beliefs, Imam Hussein went to Kufa in response to the people’s call for peace, only to be besieged by Yazid’s army at Karbala, near the Euphrates River. During the siege, even young children were denied water. Imam Hussein refused to bow to evil and chose martyrdom to write the history of truth’s victory over falsehood with his blood.

The Battle of Karbala was a tragic historical event that took place on October 10, 680 AD (10 Muharram, 61 AH) in present-day Iraq, resulting in the massacre of Hussein ibn Ali and his small caravan at the hands of Yazid’s vast army. While Shia Muslims observe mourning processions during Muharram, commemorating Imam Hussein’s martyrdom is a common practice among both Shia and Sunni Muslims.
